The school itself has developed out of both direct and indirect sources. On the one hand, a careful analysis of early recordings made by great singers active during the second half of the 19th century and early part of the 20th century gives us an indirect account of early Romantic Bel Canto Tradition - a high point in the history of vocal execution. Then we have a direct tradition handed down by the Russian teacher Mihail Schwarz, who spent years studying the great Italian singers - from Mattia Battistini to Titta Ruffo and Luisa Tetrazzini - during performances at the Maryinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.
